Mid Way Over The Rainbow

The inspiration behind this painting was the sideshows of days gone by. When the circus used to travel and just pop up overnight in a patch of vacant land. The colorfully painted banners luring you in… especially those for the sideshow attractions. And, well… they are some of my favorite things on earth. I tried to capture the dirty, gritty feel of the midway in this painting. And because of the rainbow element, the Wizard of Oz’s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” came to mind, which gave birth to the eventual title… “Mid Way Over the Rainbow” where you just might find a side show like this one. There’s lots of hidden surprises in this piece. I wanted the viewer to experience it with the same excitement as if they were visually walking around a carnival.
